The Niah Caves which are wonder to behold are among of the largest in the world. Evidence of Stone Age can be traced in the form of prehistoric paintings and primitive tools found here, dating back 40,000 years.

The increasing number of golfers in the state of Sarawak compelled the authorities to seek a bigger site to accommodate them.

In 1978, an area of 320 acres was set aside for a prestigious project which included the construction of a 36-hole international golf course – Sarawak Golf Club.

This golf course is located at the northern riverbank of the Sarawak River at Petra Jaya in Kuching, the capital of Sarawak.

A team of local engineers successfully transformed this vast tract of secondary jungle and swampland into a tricky and scenic championship course.

The grass seed (Axonopus compresses) for the fairways was imported from Australia, and common Serangoon grass was used for the greens.

Each hole was specially designed with an earnest desire to produce individuality.

Monstrous bunkers and an array of other hazards may prove quite a challenge for golfers.

A good example of this is the 9th, 615 yard hole which is the longest and perhaps one of the most difficult holes on the golf course. Golfers sometimes may need a long iron or a wood for their third shots to the green. A hooked drive may end up out of bounds, and a slice may go into the water hazard. The green is two-tiered and guarded by a huge bunker.

The pyramid-shaped clubhouse which cost RM 7.6 million, offers facilities such as a terrace bar, a restaurant, a games-room, a library, coffee house, tennis courts and a practice green.

Tanjong Kidurong Golf Club

The Tanjung Kidurong Golf Course is the latest to open in Sarawak. Situated at the Tanjong Batu Coast, about 8 km from Bintulu town, lies a 9-hole golf course designed and built by the Bintulu Development Authority, with the help of a Canada based golf architect.

Plans are in store to provide facilities like squash, badminton and tennis courts and a swimming pool.

Miri Golf Club

The Miri Golf Club’s 18-hole, 6,224 meter course by the beach front has a casual ambiance. Sea-breezes sweep across the layout, which provides for a refreshing round, but beware of the winds that can play havoc with your game.

The par-72 course known for its wide, flowing fairways ad well placed hazards. The first nine was constructed in 1917 and in 1984; the second nine was opened for play.

The greens are generally fast and well guarded by bunkers all around. On most days, the golf course is relatively uncrowded, and if you wish to enjoy a relaxing, breezy round of golf, Miri is just the place.

Miri Golf Club is located by the sea. Be mindful of the the wind. At times, the golf course will be tricky and very challenging.

Sibu Golf Club

About 16 km outside Sibu, a huge golf ball greets travellers on the Oya Road, a reminder that there is a golf course in the vicinity.

A rocky road leads visitors to the Sibu Golf clubhouse and an undulating 88 acre, par-70, 18-hole golf course, inter-spread with lakes and rolling fairways. Sibu’s delightful little golf course is a sight to behold for most visiting golfers.

Prisons Golf Club

Penrissen is an area in Kuching famed for its prison activities. However, its ‘notoriety’ has now shifted to recreation, particularly golf. By 1971, the golf course – Kuching Prinsons Golf Club was playable and a clubhouse completed.
