Locally known as Pulau Pinang (Betelnut Island), the northern gateway to Malaysia offers the chance to discover a uniquely cosmopolitan community. Also known as ‘Pearl of the Orient’, the island is a tropical paradise of swaying palm trees and sandy beaches with clear blue water and friendly people.

Georgetown, the capital, is a marvellous jumble of colonial buildings, temples, churches, restaurants and shops.

The island is accessible from the mainland by a spectacular bridge which is the longest in Southeast Asia and the third longest in the world. One can also take the slower but pleasant ferry which plies the channel.

Golf vacation is just as charming as the island itself. You may consider the 18-hole Bukit Jambul Golf and Country Club. There is also another 18-hole course at the Penang Turf Club Golf section, while the Air Force Golf club on the mainland offers a nine-hole layout.

The Bukit Jambul Country Club is another ‘miracle’ by world-famous designer Robert Irent Jones Jr., the same man who has produced marvels of golf courses out of unsavoury sites in the desert, on reclaimed land and even on volcanic rock.

Jones has transformed a piece of land that was once considered uninhabitable and unplayable into a beautiful 18-hole championship golf course that was opened in 1984.

The par-72 (5,588 m) layout has holes on the upper slopes, not only offering interesting and exciting play, but also great, scenic views of the Penang Bridge and the island’s coastline.

A proprietary club which welcomes visitors to the island, Bukit Jambul Golf course is actually managed by the Penang Development Corporation’s wholly owned subsidiary Island Golf Properties.

Conveniently surrounded by the hilly terrain and Bermuda fairways is the Penang Equatorial Hotel, which offers a golf vacation package to visitors. In a one night package, the price includes superior room accommodation; 18-holes of golf inclusive of green and caddie fees; two-way transfer to the airport, a welcome drink, full breakfast, complimentary entrance to discotheque, extended check-out time till 6 pm and free shuttle service to Gertak Sanggul beach and to the city.

The Bukit Jambul Country Club has become the crowning glory for Penang golfers and for those who choose to visit and enjoy its natural charms.

Golfers at the Air Force Golf Club may be distracted by the sound of planes flying overhead but to quote an old saying, “they are part of the game”. The par-34, (2,634 m) golf course layout in Butterworth is relatively short but has enough challenges to whet one’s appetite for an enjoyable round of golf. The greens are turfed with Serangoon, and the fairways with cow grass. Each hole has two tee-boxes; yellow tee box for the front nine, black tee box for the back nine. There is also a ladies tee-ground. Though club membership is available, priority is given to those who reside in Penang, Butterworth and South Kedah.

Penang is known as an isle of fun, frolic and recreation. The sandy beaches are usually a hub of activity during the hot season, when tourists will indulge in water-skiing, windsurfing, and horseback riding.

Horse racing at the Penang Turf Club is another popular sport , is held five times a year. But what is especially interesting is that an 18-hole golf course is also located there, with seven holes on the racetrack itself.

The par-72 golf course of the Penang Turf Club Golf Section, better known as the Bath Gantong Course is an old favourite among Penangites. On race days, golfers give way to horses, but golfers who like a little flutter can have a perfect arm-chair view of the horses and totalisator board from the comfort of the clubhouse.
